Sometimes we look so much into all the tables, data and numbers, that we miss out interesting connections. Then various summaries, graphs and presentations come to our aid. But how do you take a different look at the data? Map and simple geodata. Of course, this applies to projects where it makes sense and where you can work with GeoData for Jira.
Monitoring constructions in Slovakia has always been our priority. After testing different systems and excel spreadsheets, we finally docked with data management for constructions in Jira by Atlassian. It is true that it is necessary to get used to the new environment and to train our colleagues, but it has gradually become a natural and intuitive work environment for many of them. We appreciate the advantage of linking individual data (Note: in the Jira system we manage contacts, complaints and approval business processes) and the possibility of making quick reports.
We do not lose an up-to-date overview of what is happening, we reduce the number of duplicates and, most importantly, colleagues from individual sales teams know more about their mutual work, especially if someone manages construction in another sales region. The phrase “I made you a tracker of this building” has already become a nice slogan for us ? (note: Tracker is a Slovak translation for Watchers in Jira).
A quick look at the data
But how do you get a quick picture of the data if you don’t want to rummage through various spreadsheets, bulletin boards, and lists? Map. One quick look at the map or part of the region you care about will help you not only to find your way around quickly, but also to look at the data from a completely different perspective.
You can see the map as a view from the top down to the landscape. You can determine where the number of buildings densely accumulates or on the other hand curves. And here you can ask questions and look for causes. Many times there are buildings in your region that you don’t even know about. You can see it on the map at a glance, whether you are adding something or where there are buildings you do not know about. After all, who else has a greater overview of the locality, if not the regional representative who has traveled the region up and down? Clicking on a place on the map will open a dialog box with a basic overview: Summary of the building with a link to the object in Jira and a picture of the building. You can also adjust its position directly from this detail on the map, if necessary.
Geomap is also a handy tool for our marketing. If you include interesting references in the dataset, you will quickly find your way around at a glance. What you get from geodata depends only on your goals and creativity.
What to watch out for?
Either you teach it to your colleagues or you will hold a protective hand over geo data. For a clear map, it is important to enter the exact address or location directly on the map. If you enter the address only in general, it will naturally mark the city boundary or the whole street.
The big plus is that even if the building does not have an exact address or it is a new location, you can search for it on the map and insert the location exactly to the given place. Such a location is very helpful in orienting where the building is located. If there are terraced buildings, you can also use different designation, line or polygon.
Don’t be afraid to change datasets
What you see on the map and how you can filter it is determined by the datasets. If, while working, you find that the original settings do not suit you or you need other filters and views, be sure to change them. After all, looking at data is a living process, not archiving.
We do not end with geodata
An overview of geomap constructions is a great start for further use. Mainly in the field of customer service. Tracking the movement of our forces and machines within individual structures is our next challenge for the future.
